SERVICE OVERVIEW

When custom software makes sense

Custom software development adds functions that existing systems lack for a specific business process. At SP Webconsulting, I develop web applications, internal tools and integrations with PHP and Symfony. Shopware is my core business and a major area of application; this service also covers internal processes outside your store.

Typical starting points include duplicate data entry, manual file transfers, hard-to-maintain workarounds or standard software that cannot support an important task. I first check whether existing features or a suitable extension are sufficient. Custom development is used where it makes sense for both the business task and ongoing operation.

SERVICE SCOPE

Develop applications and connect systems

Internal web applications and back-office tools

I build interfaces for defined business tasks: checking data, processing records, combining information or managing approvals. Together, we define user roles, required information and common exceptions. The aim is an application that fits the real workflow, rather than simply creating another place to store data.

Integrations and data processing

When connecting ERP, PIM, CRM, stores or custom systems, we clarify data ownership, field mappings and transfer direction. Depending on the scope, implementation includes validation, error logs and retry mechanisms. We also establish how duplicate or conflicting records should be handled before building the integration.

Develop existing applications further

A custom solution does not have to start from scratch. I can review and extend existing PHP and Symfony applications, taking dependencies, existing tests and ongoing operation into account. If technical preparation is needed before adding a feature, I explain and plan that work separately.

POSSIBLE USE CASES

Three uses for custom software and integrations

Example workflow

Transfer data and return a status.
  1. 01
    SourceCRM or business application
  2. 02
    IntegrationValidate & map data
  3. 03
    TargetProcess the request
  4. 04
    ResponseReport status or errors

An illustrative integration. Data ownership, error handling and retries are part of technical planning.

The following examples describe possible assignments, not documented client projects.

Check product data before importing it

An internal tool shows incomplete records, allows corrections and releases checked information for transfer. This makes it clear which data is ready for the store and where information is still missing.

Pass orders to a downstream system

An integration transfers the agreed order data and records its processing status. Failed operations remain visible instead of being lost unnoticed between systems.

Replace a spreadsheet-based workaround

Several employees process the same records in files. A small web application can manage statuses, ownership and permissions. We define which elements are actually needed before development begins.

DELIVERABLES & SCOPE

Your software, handover and operating requirements

Your agreed deliverables

We agree the deliverables before starting. Depending on the scope, these may include:

  • An application or integration with agreed functionality and suitable access permissions
  • Clear rules for inputs, data mappings and error handling
  • Tests for the agreed core workflows and acceptance criteria
  • Technical documentation and agreed guidance on deployment and maintenance

What we clarify beforehand

An integration can only use functions exposed by the systems involved. Missing APIs, licence restrictions, unclear data or unavailable test environments can limit the scope. Custom software also needs long-term maintenance, so ownership and operational effort form part of the decision to develop it.

Effort and costs

For an initial assessment, describe the workflow, applications involved and any available interface documentation. We clarify the scope first, followed by effort and costs. Collaboration is remote. Technical access is provided later through a suitable, agreed channel.

WORKING TOGETHER

From requirements to a tested application

Describe the business process

We clarify who performs each task, which data is needed and what result the software should produce.

Review systems and interfaces

I examine the available documentation and access, known limitations and required licences. This forms the basis of an implementation proposal.

Develop in reviewable steps

Interfaces and processing are implemented incrementally. Feedback on working intermediate versions helps identify misunderstandings about the business requirements early.

Test and hand over in an organised way

Before release, we check normal workflows and agreed error cases. We discuss operation, access, documentation and possible further development.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

Development in real client projects.

I work on custom applications and extensions for clients and agencies. These projects involve specific business logic, existing code and connections to other systems.

Agency project · Studio Gelöst

Developing an existing PHP/Symfony application

My completed projects include further development of an existing PHP/Symfony application for an agency. Working with an established codebase is part of my practical project experience.

Agency assignment · justSelling / configento

Connecting a product configurator with Shopware

I continue developing the Shopware integration for the product configurator, focusing on custom product options and their place in the purchasing process.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Questions about software development and integrations

Is integration possible without an API?

Sometimes file imports or other supported methods are available. Without reliable access, however, an integration may be technically unsuitable or uneconomical.

When is custom software worthwhile compared with a standard solution?

A custom application may make sense when existing products require complex workarounds for important business processes. We first compare functionality, integration options, licence costs and long-term maintenance effort. A small addition to your existing software may be enough.

Can you extend an existing PHP or Symfony application?

Yes, after reviewing its source code, dependencies and operating environment. We establish which parts can be reused and where technical preparation is necessary. Missing tests and significantly outdated components are taken into account when planning.

How are integration errors and duplicate transfers handled?

We define how records are uniquely identified, how errors are logged and how transfers can be retried. Depending on the other system, queues, reconciliation or manual correction steps may be needed. The available APIs determine which mechanisms are technically possible.

How are development and live operation kept separate?

Where possible, changes are prepared in a separate development and test environment. We agree acceptance criteria and check relevant business processes before release. For production use, we agree access, data changes, backups and any necessary rollback approach.

NEXT STEP

Which function or connection is missing?

Describe the applications involved and what you want to happen between them. We can review existing interface documentation together in the next step.

Your enquiry goes directly to me, Stefan Pilz. We agree the scope and costs before you commission any work.

What happens next

  1. Clarify the situation

I read your enquiry and get back to you. Together, we clarify your goals, constraints and open questions.

  2. Choose a practical starting point

Depending on the project, we start with a specific implementation or an analysis agreed in advance.

  3. Agree on scope and a proposal

You know which services and deliverables are included. We agree on scope, effort and costs before you commission the work.
